Texas driver's license & registration guide for new residents
New Texas residents have 90 days to transfer a license and 30 to register a vehicle. Here's how, the costs, and a required form.

❗️Quick Info: After relocating to Texas, you have a 90-day timeframe to switch your out-of-state driver’s license and a 30-day window to register your vehicle in the Lone Star State.

Welcome to Texas, the vast state known for its unique blend of Southern and Western cultures, diverse landscapes, and deep-rooted history! As you lay down roots in this expansive state, it’s vital to ensure your driving and vehicle documents are updated in line with Texas’ regulations. Here’s a concise guide to assist you.

Process for Obtaining a License in Texas

  • Visit a Service Center: Make your way to any full-service driver service center within 90 days of your move.
  • Complete an Application: You must complete a driver’s license application before arriving. Texas service centers no longer provide the form in the office.
  • Required Documents: Present your current license or a certified driving record, proof of each of the following:
    • Identity (your valid out-of-state license does qualify)
    • Social security number
    • U.S. Citizenship or lawful presence
    • 2 proofs of Texas residency
  • Surrender Previous License: Hand over your out-of-state license during your Texas license application.
  • Cost: License fees differ by type. A standard Class A, B, or C license costs $33 (for ages 18-84) and remains valid for eight years.

Vehicle Registration in Texas

  • Initial Inspection: Start by taking your vehicle to a certified Vehicle Inspection station for a passing Texas inspection. Carry your insurance card, as they’ll request proof of insurance. A two-year safety inspection costs $16.75.
  • County Tax-Assessor Collector Office: After inspection, visit your local tax-assessors office with your insurance card, the Vehicle Inspection Report, and proof of vehicle ownership, like your previous state’s title or registration.
  • Registration Fees: The standard registration fee is $50.75, plus an additional $1 for TexasSure and other initiatives. Note: fees may fluctuate based on the vehicle’s type and weight.

Emissions Testing

All Texas-registered vehicles undergo an annual or biannual safety inspection. The following counties may include emissions testing and an extra $2.75 for the safety inspection:

  • Brazoria
  • Collin
  • Dallas
  • Denton
  • El Paso
  • Ellis
  • Fort Bend
  • Galveston
  • Harris
  • Johnson
  • Kaufman
