Process for Obtaining a License in New Hampshire

  • DMV Visit: Within 60 days of becoming a resident, make an appointment and head to the nearest DMV office.
  • Application: Fill in the Application for Driver License or Non-Driver ID (DSMV 450).
  • Complete a vision test: You need at least 20/40 vision in both eyes with or without corrective lenses.
  • Documentation: You’d need proof of identity and residency, and you’ll undergo a vision test.
  • Payment: Be ready to pay a fee depending on the license type. An Operator (not federally compliant) license is priced at $50.00, while a REAL ID Operator (federally compliant) license will cost you $60.00.

Vehicle Registration in New Hampshire

  • Timelines: Just like the driver’s license, you have 60 days from becoming a resident to register your vehicle.
  • Emissions and Safety Testing: Vehicles registered in New Hampshire must undergo a safety inspection within ten days of registration. As a resident, prepare for annual testing to be completed ten days after your birth month’s end. Inspections can be completed at any state-licensed inspection station and typically cost between $20 to $50.
  • Prepare Documentation: Have your original title and two proofs of residency available. If you lease, provide the lease agreement and the lienholder’s name.
  • Two-Part Process: Registering a vehicle in New Hampshire involves a unique two-step process:
    • Town/City Clerk: Head to the town or city clerk’s office of your residence. Here, they’ll verify your residency and initiate the registration process.
    • State Transaction: This can sometimes be completed at the town/city clerk’s office itself, sometimes for an extra fee.

Registration Fees

Remember, separate fees exist for the town/city and the state. The state fees for passenger vehicles are charged by weight:

  • 0-3000 lbs. $31.20 ($2.60 per month)
  • 3001-5000 lbs. $43.20 ($3.60 per month)
  • 5001-8000 lbs. $55.20 ($4.60 per month)
  • 8001-73,280 lbs. $ .96 per hundred lbs. gross weight.

The City/Town determines fees by MSRP rounded to the nearest $100:

  • 18 mills on each dollar of the maker’s list price for a current model year vehicle.
  • 15 mills on each dollar of the maker’s list price for the first preceding model year vehicle.
  • 12 mills on each dollar of the maker’s list price for the second preceding model year vehicle.
  • 9 mills on each dollar of the maker’s list price for the third preceding model year vehicle.
  • 6 mills on each dollar of the maker’s list price for the fourth preceding model year vehicle.
  • 3 mills on each dollar of the maker’s list price for the fifth preceding model year vehicle and any model year prior thereto.

The fee can not be less than $5. An additional $8 fee applies for first-time license plate issuance.

Conclusion

With its stunning landscapes, rich history, and welcoming communities, New Hampshire promises an enriching life experience. While moving can be overwhelming, following the guidelines above can make the process of transitioning your driving and vehicle registration documents hassle-free. Enjoy the scenic drives and the warmth of New Hampshire!
