Process for Obtaining a License in Nevada

  • Visit the DMV: Kickstart your transition at the closest Nevada DMV office. It’s an in-person commitment.
  • Complete an application: Save some time and complete an Application for Driving Privilege in advance.
  • License Exchange: Be prepared to surrender your existing out-of-state driver’s license.
  • Documentation: Along with your previous license, be ready with proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Status, verification of your identity, and two documents that confirm your Nevada address.
  • Pay a Fee: A standard Nevada driver’s license valid for 8 years will set you back $41.25. However, if you’re 65 or older, the validity reduces to 4 years, and the fee is a modest $17.25.

Vehicle Registration in Nevada

For Nevada registration, you must qualify as a resident or meet specific non-resident conditions.

  • Pass That Smog Check: Las Vegas Metro and Reno residents require emissions testing to register a vehicle. You can find small smog check stations near many gas stations in Las Vegas.
  • VIN Inspection: A VIN inspection is required for vehicles with no previous registration in Nevada. You’ll find an inspection station outside the main DMV buildings; no appointment is necessary. If you don’t see signs for inspection in a rural area, the DMV will complete the inspection during registration.
  • Back to the DMV: Head back to your nearest Nevada DMV to finish your registration.
  • Must-have Documents: Bring your existing out-of-state registration, proof of Nevada insurance, and passing emissions & VIN inspection certificates.
  • Pay Registration Fees: Based on the vehicle’s value, registration fees in Nevada can be high (often over $1,000 for more expensive vehicles). Nevada charges basic registration fees on top of a Governmental Services Taxes. A standard registration fee is $33, and a first-time Nevada title fetches a fee of $28.25. Estimate your registration fees.
