But, of the six locations, Oak Leaf Park and Stonebridge Park are the only public pickleball courts in Summerlin. The additional four are located in private, active-adult communities.

Pickleball 101

In 2020, the sport of Pickleball grew in active players by a whopping 21%. This fun mix of Tennis, Badminton, and Table Tennis now claims an estimated 4.8 million players in the U.S.

Thankfully, the recent surge in popularity of this nearly 60-year-old game has drawn the attention of parks departments around the nation, including here in Las Vegas.

Pickleball is a fun and easy-to-learn game that combines Tennis, Badminton, and Ping Pong. In Pickleball, instead of threaded rackets, players use wooden paddles, like table tennis, and a polymer whiffle ball on courts one-third the size of Tennis.

The Pickleball court

The design of a Pickleball court is opposite a tennis court. Pickleball courts have a front non-volley zone and two back squares. They are also one-third the size of tennis courts—making them perfect for parks of all sizes.

The dimensions of a Pickleball court are 20 feet wide and 44 feet long. The net sits 36 inches high at each end and 34 inches in the middle—Tennis court nets sit 36 inches high in the middle.

The non-volley line—also known as the kitchen—encompasses the first seven feet of each side from the net.

Playing Pickleball

Like all paddle and racket games, the game of Pickleball starts with the serve. Serves begin from the back line of the court, with the server hitting diagonally into the opposing team’s back square.

Upon the initial serve, each team continues to serve until the serving team commits one fault. In doubles matches, subsequent serves have a two-fault out rule allowing for each team member to serve.

In Pickleball, there are two types of serves, with rules that apply. The two serving styles include:

  • Volley serve: In a volley serve, the ball is dropped and hit from below the waist without touching the ground. The paddle can not pass higher than the server’s waist on a volley serve.
  • Drop serve: When drop serving, you allow the ball to bounce once before hitting. There are no paddle limitations on a drop serve.

When playing a singles game, a score of zero or even serves from the right side, while an odd score serves from the left.

The first side to score 11 points while leading by two points wins. However, tournament play can continue to 15 or 21 points changing sides at the halfway point.

Additional Pickleball rules

Like most games, there’s an extensive list of rules for Pickleball. You can learn more about the game of Pickleball and the detailed rules at Pickleball.com

The “must-know” rules include the following:

  • The ball must bounce once on a serve before being returned.
  • The ball can’t bounce twice.
  • Players must announce scores before each serve in the order of server first “Five Zero.” In doubles, declare the server with a one or two position, “Five Zero Two.”
  • A player may enter the non-volley zone but cannot remain in it.
