Process for Obtaining a License in North Carolina

  • Visit a NCDMV Office: You have a 60-day window from establishing residency to switching your out-of-state driver’s license. Schedule an appointment first to expedite the process.
  • Documentation: Prepare the following for your visit:
    • Out-of-state license or a document verifying identity and date of birth.
    • Social Security card or another document proving your Social Security number.
    • Two documents verifying your physical address in North Carolina (only one required if not obtaining an NC REAL ID).
    • For those not born in the U.S., a document proving legal presence/lawful status.
    • Proof of liability insurance coverage from a North Carolina-licensed provider.

  • Register In-Person: At a local license plate agency, provide:
    • The Vehicle title or a registration card if the title is held by a lender.
